BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A professor and alumna from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Engineering have been honored as top industry performers by the annual Engineering Council of Birmingham (ECOB).
ECOB members named Fouad Fouad, Ph.D., chair of the UAB Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, the region's Engineer of the Year. Fouad was recognized for his 28 plus years on the UAB faculty and for his active role on the technical committees of numerous professional societies.
UAB graduate Shunna Marie Cannon, an employee of Alabama Power Company, was named the ECOB Young Engineer of the Year. Cannon received a UAB bachelor's degree in civil, construction and environmental engineering in 2004 and a master's degree in the same discipline in 2005.
The UAB School of Engineering's annual top student awards, as selected by the school's faculty and staff, also were presented during the banquet, held Feb. 18 at The Club. Stefan M. Schmidt, a senior from Madison, was named the school's Undergraduate Student of the Year. Candace Watson, a Ph.D. candidate from Canton, Mich., was named the school's Graduate Student of Year. They were chosen from all students receiving departmental and program honors:

Graduate Student of the Year: Varadraj Gurupur of Mangalore, India

Undergraduate Student of the Year: David Sexton of Columbiana
Graduate Student of the Year: Andrew Uehlin of Birmingham
- UAB Department of Mechanical Engineering
Undergraduate Student of the Year: Haley Rilling of Brewton
Graduate Student of the Year: Jackson Willis of Birmingham

Graduate Student of the Year: Mark Berry of Birmingham
