BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's Alys Stephens Center will present the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 in the center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform with Music Director and Conductor Alexei Kornienko and violinist Nadezda Tokareva. Concertgoers will experience the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky performed by this renowned 160-member Russian orchestra, which was founded in 1978 so the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries could be broadcast nationwide for the benefit of its citizens. From 1995 until 2006 the orchestra issued 32 recordings.

The orchestra gives subscription concerts, "Young Stars of Russia," in Tchaikovsky Hall and in the Moscow Conservatory Great Hall that are broadcast by radio stations and television channels. The orchestra also presents "Music Has No Borders" concerts with the participation of foreign musicians and conductors in the Moscow House of Radio. In addition to the orchestra's extensive work for television, radio and film soundtracks, it has performed at the Kremlin Palace with the Moscow Classical Ballet in performances of "The Nutcracker," "Giselle," "Don Quixote," "Cinderella" and "Firebird." The orchestra has performed in Munich, Stuttgart, Rome, Naples, Milan, Florence, Madrid, Barcelona, Saragossa, Seoul, Pussan, Peking, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, Fort Worth, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
