BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Arts events and happenings at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are featured every other month on “Art Matters,” a half-hour public access program on Bright House Networks.

The show is scheduled to air several times each week on Bright House Channel 4, including at 9 p.m. Monday, 6 p.m. Tuesday, 10 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Thursday. It can be viewed by more than 56,000 customers throughout Jefferson County. The program also is available on Bright House’s Birmingham On Demand, which can be viewed by more than 36,000 people.

The November episode of “Art Matters at UAB” features a segment on the UAB Department of Music. Department Chairman Jeff W Reynolds, D.M.A., discusses the department's diverse programs and offerings, upcoming events, including the UAB Music Technology Academy and many free performances, as well as the department’s 17 performing ensembles such as the UAB Computer Music Ensemble and UAB Concert Choir.

The second segment features the Alys Stephens Center’s Jerry Sims, creator of original theatrical productions for the ASC Kids Club series. Sims talks about the creation of the plays and upcoming shows and the center’s Arts in Action education and outreach activities. Highlighted is the upcoming “Yuletide in Dogtown” play for children Dec. 5. “Yuletide in Dogtown” is about a town of dogs getting ready for the holidays when a cat suddenly moves in to town. Will the fur fly or will they all get along and enjoy the holiday together?

The final segment is an interview with UAB professor and sculptor John Douglas Powers, M.F.A. Powers talks about his work, his teaching and a recent prize win at ArtBlink, a new international art competition that took place in Grand Rapids, Mich. The segment also features a short video on Powers’ kinetic, or moving, sculpture, “Remember,” based on vintage typewriters.

UAB shares the program with the Birmingham Museum of Art. New episodes featuring the arts at UAB will air in January and March 2010.
