BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lutz Hermann Görgens, Ph.D., the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, will deliver the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Belton Y. Cooper Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Görgens lecture, titled "Germany After the Wall, 1989-2009," will examine the political and cultural transformation of Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Görgens, a native of Dusseldorf, Germany, is the official representative of the German government to the Southeastern United States.

During his career, Görgens has worked as a desk officer for the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn, Germany, and later as first secretary and head of the Economic Section for the Germany Embassy in Mexico. He later became a deputy consul general in Boston, head of the Economic Section in the German Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, and head of the European Internal Market Affairs Unit of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

The UAB Belton Y. Cooper Lecture Series, created in the UAB Department of History and Anthropology, presents an annual lecture on military history and social conflict. The series was named after Belton Cooper, a Birmingham-area WWII veteran.
