4,000 for the 40th: UAB Student Food Drive Under Way

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Student Alumni Society is leading a drive to collect 4,000 canned and nonperishable food items as part of the university’s commemoration of its 40th anniversary. The food drive to help combat hunger in the metro area, which celebrates the school’s long tradition of service, continues through Thursday, Sept. 24, when UAB will mark its founding with University Day.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Student Alumni Society is leading a drive to collect 4,000 canned and nonperishable food items as part of the university's commemoration of its 40th anniversary. The food drive to help combat hunger in the metro area, which celebrates the school's long tradition of service, continues through Thursday, Sept. 24, when UAB will mark its founding with University Day.

The community food drive will benefit Magic City Harvest. Donations may be dropped off at the green collection boxes in the following locations:

  • UAB Administration Building first floor lobby, 701 20th St. South
  • Hill University Center first floor lobby, 1400 University Blvd.
  • Commons on the Green, 900 16th St. South
  • Campus Recreation Center, 1501 University Blvd.
  • Alumni Affairs Office, 516 20th St. South
  • Mervyn H. Sterne Library, 917 13th St. South
  • Lister Hill Library, 1700 University Blvd.

Collection boxes also are located inside all residence halls. For more information, contact the UAB Office of Alumni Affairs at 934-5555.

The three UAB student organizations that collect the largest number of items will receive an award and special recognition. Student organizations should contact the UAB Office of Student Involvement at 934-8020 for details on the competition.

Marking "Forty Years of Breakthroughs," University Day on Sept. 24 will include an academic convocation featuring 40 distinguished alumni representing classes from 1969 to 2009. The convocation will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Alys Stephens Center Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Afterward, an invitation-only luncheon will be held at The Club atop Red Mountain.
