BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama Gov. Bob Riley has appointed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor Brian F. Geiger, Ed.D., FAAHE, to the Alabama Respite Coalition.

The Alabama Respite Coalition addresses issues that affect caregivers. The coalition's duties include building partnerships and coordinating respite efforts statewide, raising public awareness of respite care, identifying, coordinating and developing resources for respite services and building local partnerships and collaborations that support respite services.

Geiger teaches in the UAB School of Education's Department of Human Studies and is a senior scientist in the UAB Center for the Study of Community Health. He also is a scientist in the UAB Center for Aging and the UAB Clinical Nutrition Research Center.

Geiger earned his bachelor's degree from Tulane University in 1984, his master's degree in 1988 from Loyola University and his doctorate in health education administration from the University of South Carolina in 1993. He has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1993.
