BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ovuke Emonina, the academic adviser for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Biology, has won a National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Outstanding New Adviser Certificate of Merit.

Emonina is one of 15 advisers across the nation to receive the certificate of merit this year. The NACADA Outstanding New Adviser Awards are presented annually to those who have worked as advisers for three years or less and have demonstrated outstanding abilities as advisers. The awards will be presented at NACADA's national conference Sept. 30 in San Antonio.

Emonina worked two years as an adviser in Exploratory Studies for undeclared majors at UAB before becoming an adviser in the Department of Biology. In April, she won the 2009 UAB Outstanding New Adviser Award. The UAB award is given annually by the university to recognize excellence in advising on the UAB campus.

NACADA has more than 10,000 members consisting of faculty, professional advisers, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA represents academic advisers and advising administrators and is an advocate for academic advising.
