The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Early Medical Professional Schools Acceptance Program has accepted 12 high school students for 2009-2010.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Early Medical Professional Schools Acceptance Program has accepted 12 high school students for 2009-2010.

To qualify, students must have at least a 3.5 overall G.P.A, and score at least 30 on the ACT or at least 1320 on the SAT. Among the 12 students accepted into UAB EMPSAP this year are four National Merit Scholar finalists. Their average ACT score is 34.

Once EMPSAP members complete their bachelor's degree at UAB they are given a reserved place in the UAB schools of medicine, dentistry or optometry.

EMPSAP provides undergraduates with experiences that prepare them for the health professions. EMPSAP students attend challenging classes and seminars and participate in hands-on clinical and research experiences. Gregory Pence, Ph.D., a UAB professor of philosophy and medical ethics, directs EMPSAP.

The following EMPSAP students will attend the UAB School of Medicine after obtaining their undergraduate degree at UAB:

  • Allen Young, James Madison Memorial High School, Madison, Wis.
  • Varsha Reddy, The John Cooper School, Woodlands, Texas
  • Michelle Chang, John P. Stevens High School, Edison, N.J.
  • Raam Venkatesh, Lakeside High School, Augusta, Ga.
  • Sherwin Thomas, Utica Center for Mathematics, Science, & Technology, Shelby Township, Mich.
  • Tripp Ference, Catholic High School, Huntsville
  • Kaleb Estes, Hartselle High School, Hartselle
  • Rachelle Rosales, Athens High School, Athens
  • Mingchun Liu, Vestavia Hills High School, Vestavia Hills
  • Mallick Hossain, Gadsden City High School, Rainbow City

Two other EMPSAP students will attend the UAB School of Dentistry after earning their bachelor's degree at UAB: Nick Kim of Loveless Academic Magnet School in Montgomery and Helen Kim of Hoover High School in Hoover.
