BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Opera presents Mozart's "The Magic Flute" with full orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. nightly Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21, in the Alys Stephens Center's Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. S., Birmingham. UAB Opera, directed by Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, D.M.A., is presented by the UAB Department of Music. "The Magic Flute" is a two-act opera with comic situations, set in Egypt, based on a fairy tale with a handsome prince, a gentle heroine and a wicked queen and sorcerer at war. The production features a full set with costumes and a professional orchestra, led by Les Fillmer.

"The Magic Flute" was Mozart's last opera, composed shortly before he died at the age of 35 in 1791. It is a singspiel, meaning all dialogue is spoken rather than sung; this makes it truly a precursor to today's musical theater, Hurst-Wajszczuck said.

The cast is Will Sparks, Mark Kunkel and Lauren Culotta, all of Birmingham; Kiyoshi Scissum, Tyler Henderson, Bryan Bastow and Sean Fleischman, all of Huntsville; Charles Daniel of Corner; Samantha Pace of Alabaster; Brianna Moore of Arab; Marybeth Verchot of Decatur; Jessica Johnson of Florence; Maegan Reid of Trafford; Lori Ayler of Mobile; Madison Holler of Helena; Rhea Reuter of Madison; Jake Richey of Clay; Nathan Byers of Hoover; Jacob Wooten of Alabaster; and Brian Denton of Mount Olive. The chorus is Reid, Holler, Ayler, Fleischman, Denton, Kunkel, Wooten, Bastow, Sadie Mason-Smith of Alabaster, Kelsey Daniel and Jen Fisher of Birmingham, Will Lightfoot of Mobile, Chris Barbee of Trussville and Jason Leger of Midland City.
