[New event!] March 7 - Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival, at the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. S., Birmingham. The Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival features recent short films by filmmakers living and working in the Southeastern United States. The films are juried for their artistic merit by a panel of media-arts professionals. It is the nation's only tour of Southern films. The festival features two screenings, each with a different lineup of films: Screening One is 5-6:30 p.m. and Screening Two is 7-9:30 p.m. A "Chat 'n Chew Dinner Break" with $10 box dinners will be held between screenings. Box dinners feature Southern favorites like black eye pea salad, pecan chicken salad sandwich and dessert. The festival also will feature a cash bar and a Southern crafts and artwork booth. Attend one event or all three: tickets to each screening are $10 or enjoy both screenings and a box dinner for $25. Box dinners must be reserved in advance. March 21 - Spanish Harlem Orchestra, 8 p.m., presented by the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. S., Birmingham. New York City's Spanish Harlem is the birthplace of salsa, Latin soul and boogaloo, and this Grammy-winning ensemble is the premier ambassador. They've received the Latin Billboard Award for Salsa Album of the Year and Grammy nod for Best Salsa Album. March 29 - Leon Fleisher and Katherine Jacobson Fleisher present "Shall We Dance," 3 p.m., co-presented by the Alys Stephens Center and the Birmingham Chamber Music Society with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, at the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. S., Birmingham. Pianist/conductor Leon Fleisher is joined by his wife, acclaimed pianist Katherine Jacobson Fleisher, for a special program featuring the works of Schubert, Brahms, Ravel and Dvorak.
