BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Distinguished UAB alumni, including Superintendent of Tuscaloosa City Schools Joyce Levey, Ph.D., and one of the Birmingham Business Journal's 2008 Top 40 Under 40 business leaders, attorney Stephen Walsh, will be honored in an on-campus ceremony Jan. 22. The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Scholarship and Awards Luncheon also will recognize some 80 current students who have excelled in a range of disciplines from computer science to chemistry. The event is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. inside the Upper Lobby of the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. S.
ABOUT THE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI HONOREES
Joyce C. Levey, BS Natural Science 1981
Since 2004, Levey has been Superintendent of the Tuscaloosa City School System. She also has held administrative and faculty positions at Central High School in Tuscaloosa and the school districts in Pelham and Vestavia Hills.
"Dr. Joyce Levey is the type of graduate that we want to celebrate," said Lowell Wenger, Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. "Her love of education and learning has brought her to the top of her profession, and UAB is proud that a part of her passion for teaching was instilled during her undergraduate work here on campus."
Stephen A. Walsh, BS Math 1995
Walsh is the partner in charge of the Birmingham law office of Adams and Reese and is a member of the firm's special business services practice group. He is an experienced civil litigator and is admitted to practice in all federal and state courts in Alabama. The Birmingham Business Journal included Walsh on its 2008 Top 40 Under 40 listing.
"Our mission at UAB is to not only pass on knowledge to our students but to instill the values that make great leaders," Wenger said. "Stephen Walsh has left UAB to become one of the Birmingham community's most valued leaders as recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal last year when the publication named him one of the top 40 professionals under 40."
Marc H. Slattery, PhD., Biology 1994
Slattery is a tenured professor of pharmacognosy at the University of Mississippi, and director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Ocean Biotechnology Center & Repository. He has been a consultant to the United Nations on marine genetic resources and to the NOAA on oceans and human health issues.
"Marc Slattery embodies UAB's dedication to research-based learning, and the research foundation he laid while studying as a doctoral student in the Department of Biology has led him to be one of the foremost researchers in his field, taking him as far as the United Nations, to which he has served as a consultant on marine genetic resources," Wenger said.
