BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Larry C. Kilgore, M.D., has been named the J. Max Austin, Jr., M.D. Endowed Professor in Gynecologic Oncology. The appointment was approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.
Kilgore is a professor in UAB's Division of Gynecologic Oncology and a scientist in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has served as residency director for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship director for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology for more than a decade.
"Dr. Kilgore is a physician-scientist who keeps patient care at its highest level while maintaining a disciplined education focus," said Ronald Alvarez, M.D., UAB professor and director of the gynecologic oncology division. "He is an accomplished surgeon and clinical investigator, and has mentored countless numbers of residents and fellows."
Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., Kilgore earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis. He completed his residency and a fellowship at UAB and won an American Cancer Society clinical fellowship award at UAB in 1986.
Kilgore's professional honors span more than two decades and include a pair of Argus Society awards from UAB for best attending doctor in obstetrics and gynecology. He has been named to the "Best Doctors in America" ranking multiple times.
The endowed chair is named for J. Max Austin Jr., M.D., who began as a resident at UAB in 1969 and moved up through the ranks of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, becoming associate director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology in 1975. He left UAB to work in private practice, and then returned to UAB in 2000 as a professor and noted academic leader.
