The UAB Visual Arts Gallery is located at 900 13th St. S. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. Admission to the gallery is free. Call 205-934-0815.
Sept. 5 - Oct. 3 Selected works by Angela West, UAB Morton Visiting Artist
Angela West is the inaugural John Morton Visiting Artist at UAB. Her works explore issues of women's history as well as questions of place. The exhibition will feature nine works from her "Sweet Sixteen" series, a selection of works from her "Corsage" series and a number of large-scale landscapes taken predominantly from the areas around Dahlonega, Ga. West, based in Atlanta, has an MFA from Yale University and is represented by Jackson Fine Art, Atlanta. An opening reception is planned for 5-7 p.m. Friday Sept. 5, at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. S. Admission is free. Call 205-934-0815.
Oct. 10 - Nov. 1 Ross T. Smith: Hemi Tuwharerangi Paraha and Stations of the Cross
The UAB Visual Arts Gallery presents two distinct series of works by New Zealand Maori photographer Ross T. Smith. The first is a series of images of a single subject, a Maori man named Hemi Tuwharerangi Paraha. The second is an interpretation of the Stations of the Cross, drawn abstractly from a number of images of New Zealand and presented as a work that is more than 27 feet long. Smith will be in Birmingham for the opening reception scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. S. Admission is free. Call 205-934-0815.
