WHAT:

Dr. Sarah McNutt, research associate with the department of emergency medicine at UAB, will attend the Presidential Inauguration as a volunteer of the Alabama-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT). She will join 31 other DMAT volunteers from across the nation in providing medical support services for the event. “We anticipate mostly minor injuries,” says McNutt. “However, we will have equipment and medical supplies on hand to treat more serious conditions such as chest pain, or other injuries in the event of a disaster.”

DMAT volunteers will make up six medial teams supporting the event. Teams will staff two medical trailers as well as medical stations throughout the capital grounds.

“I’m looking forward to going,” says McNutt. “The opportunity to be part of this event is very exciting. It’s an honor to represent Alabama-1 DMAT in this capacity.”

DMATs are federal resources deployable by the National Disaster Medical System. They are comprised of medical and other professionals trained to provide emergency medical care during a disaster or other event. Alabama-1 DMAT is sponsored by the Center for Disaster Preparedness at UAB and the VA Medical Center in Birmingham.
