BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Alabama Regional Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will host a seminar on school violence on April 27. Two UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) faculty are among the speakers for “School Violence: Prevention, Identification and Treatment Strategies.” The free conference is from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at the Scrushy Conference Center, One HealthSouth Parkway in Birmingham.

Michael Windle, Ph.D., UAB professor of psychology will speak on Intervention Strategies, What We Know and What We Don’t Know. Larry Tyson, Ph.D., UAB assistant professor of education will address Prevention Strategies in the School and at Home.

Dr. David Reynolds, president of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics will speak on Firearms and Media Violence, Adding Fuel to the Fire. Dr. Tommy Vaughn, a psychiatrist for Children’s Behavioral Health will discuss The Teenager and Signs of At-Risk Youth. The conference is chaired by Dr. Donald Paoletti, president of the Alabama Regional Council, AACAP.

Tyson is an assistant professor of counseling and program advisor for the school counseling program at UAB. Windle directs a comprehensive center on youth violence at UAB, which will conduct two large studies on youth violence including a five-year study to identify children who exhibit early risk factors for committing dating and domestic violence later in life.
