Posted on July 11, 2001 at 12:45 p.m. BIRMINGHAM, AL — Brandon Edward Holmes of Hoover is the recipient of the UAB Harry “The Hat” Walker Memorial Scholarship. He is the son of Ralph and Cindy Holmes of Hoover. The $1,000 scholarship is presented each year to a baseball student-athlete who has completed his eligibility and is completing his undergraduate degree. The scholarship was created in memory of UAB’s first head baseball coach, who posted 211 wins and led the program to two Sun Belt North Division championships. Walker spent 22 years as a player in major league baseball, winning the National League Batting title in 1947. He also spent 20 years as a manager in major league baseball. Holmes, senior communications studies major, plays outfield for the UAB baseball team. He will graduate in May 2002. He is a 1997 graduate of Hoover High School, where he played baseball for four years and was named Most Valuable Player as a member of the football team.
