The Alabama 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (AL 1 DMAT), a volunteer organization sponsored by UAB’s Center for Disaster Preparedness and the Birmingham VA Medical Center, will be activated in October to provide medical assistance to emergency response teams working in New York City.

WHAT:

  

The Alabama 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (AL 1 DMAT), a volunteer organization sponsored by UAB’s Center for Disaster Preparedness and the Birmingham VA Medical Center, will be activated in October to provide medical assistance to emergency response teams working in New York City. More than 2,000 emergency response personnel continue to work around the clock to find survivors and clean up the area following last week’s attacks on the World Trade Towers. AL 1 DMAT will join other DMAT teams assigned to the area in providing medical care for these workers.

 

 

 

WHEN:

  

October 9 to 21, 2001

 

 

 

WHERE:

  

Some team members will work on advance teams providing medical care at the primary site. Others will be stationed at perimeter clinics. Both advance and clinic teams will serve as “staging” units to treat and release workers or prepare them for transport to area hospitals.

The team is collecting money to help pay for the purchase of required uniforms and protective gear.
