BIRMINGHAM, AL — Harold P. Jones, Ph.D., professor and dean of UAB’s (University of Alabama at Birmingham) School of Health Related Professions, has received the J. Warren Perry Distinguished Author award from the Journal of Allied Health. The award recognizes Jones’s article, “Leadership Progression in Schools of Allied Health,” published in the winter 2000/2001 edition of the journal.

The journal staff and its editorial board selected the article from all those published in 2001.

“High quality articles such as Dr. Jones’ make a significant contribution to advancing the various allied health professions and to establishing the Journal of Allied Health as one of the premier journals in the field,” said Kevin J. Lyons, Ph.D., editor of the journal.

Jones’ article focused on understanding the needs for leadership development within the allied health education community. He examined the trends in vacancies of deanships in allied health schools over the next five years, including number of vacancies, geographic location and type of institution, coupled with an assessment by current deans of the skills needed to assume these vacant positions. Jones also examined the dean’s perceptions of qualified candidates within their own institutions to fill these spots. A second follow-up study, to be published later this year, will examine the perceptions and results of search committees that have filled deanship vacancies in the past three years.
