BIRMINGHAM, AL — Monalisa Ghosh from Monroeville, a senior at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile, has been named the first UAB AmSouth Academic Scholar, the largest and most prestigious scholarship in the university’s history. She will enter the biomedical engineering program this fall in the UAB School of Engineering.

She is the daughter of Dr. Kanai Lal Ghosh and Kalpana Rani Ghosh of Monroeville.

The scholarship was made possible by a $1 million gift from AmSouth Bank to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The newly established AmSouth Academic Scholars Endowment is a merit-based scholarship program that will provide Ghosh with a $12,500 annual award, renewable for four years.

Gosh has a 4.77 high school GPA. Her numerous academic achievements include been named a National Merit finalist and an AP Scholar by the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program. She was nominated to attend the National Youth Leaders’ Conference for academically successful student leaders in Washington, D.C., and she was invited by People to People International and Gov. Don Siegelman to be a member of the official State of Alabama delegation traveling to Australia and New Zealand this summer.

She also won the Youth Merit Award for outstanding leadership, scholarship and service presented by the Rotary Club of Mobile and is included in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

She is Editor in Chief of her high school yearbook, secretary of Student Government and staff writer for her school newspaper. She tutors middle school students, assisted with Habitat for Humanity and volunteered for the YMCA and Salvation Army.
