BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. Waldemar Carlo, professor of pediatrics and director of the division of neonatology at UAB, has been named as the first holder of the Edwin M. Dixon Chair in Neonatology, an endowment to support pediatric research. Carlo also serves as director of the regional neonatal intensive care unit at UAB and the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Carlo is a renowned authority on mechanical ventilation of neonates with severe respiratory failure. He has led numerous research studies focusing on neonates and most recently served as lead investigator of the Neonatal Research Network, a multi-center collaborative research effort funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Carlo joined UAB in 1990. Before joining UAB, he was associate director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan. He completed his pediatric and chief residencies at Puerto Rico’s University Children’s Hospital in San Juan and his specialty training in neonatal/perinatal medicine at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University.

His many professional memberships include the Society for Pediatric Research, the American Pediatric Society, the Perinatal Research Society, and the Executive Committee of the Perinatal Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is co-chair of the National Neonatal Resuscitation Steering Committee.
