BIRMINGHAM, AL — This fall, the University of Alabama at Birmingham will offer two of its English classes online. This latest development will make the English Department the first in the School of Arts and Humanities to offer classes via the Web.
Students who want to learn online will be able to enroll in one of two sections of English Composition 101. The students in the class are required to have a basic knowledge of the computer, a high-speed modem and Internet access. Students will be able to access course materials and syllabus from a Web site and interact with their instructors through e-mail, chat rooms and a class bulletin board. The class instructors will be Michalle [cq] Barnett and Rita Treutel.
Students will enjoy the flexibility of the online classes, said Associate Professor Peggy Jolly, Ph.D., director of freshman composition at UAB. Jolly said the department plans to offer English Composition 102 online by the winter term.
