BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. Johnny W. Scott, professor of nuclear medicine and assistant dean of the School of Medicine at UAB, has been named the new faculty athletics representative, announced UAB President W. Ann Reynolds. The appointment is effective September 1. Scott replaces Rose Scripa, Ph.D., who has served as the faculty athletics representative since 1992 and has taken on new administrative duties.
“Dr. Scott is a person of integrity and respect who will continue the tradition of keen faculty oversight for our athletics program,” Reynolds said. “Dr. Scripa has done a wonderful job in this role and we are all grateful to her.”
Scott joined the UAB faculty in 1978 as an assistant professor of clinical pathology and nuclear medicine. He was promoted to associate professor in 1983 and professor in 1991. In 1999 he was named assistant dean for the School of Medicine to direct efforts to recruit minority students and faculty to the medical school.
A native of Westfield, Alabama, Scott received his medical degree from the School of Medicine at UAB. He also holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and a master’s degree in nuclear chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Clark College in Atlanta.
