BIRMINGHAM, AL — UAB Health System and the UAB School of Nursing will celebrate Nurses Week, May 6-12. The theme for this year’s national event, organized by the American Nurses Association, is “Nurses Care for America.” The special emphasis week is observed annually in recognition of the contribution nurses make to the community. Following are just a few of the UAB activities planned:
Monday, May 6, 2002
Noon to 1:30 p.m. — Nurse Scholar Day Luncheon
The Club (Atop Red Mountain)
Gayle Page, D.N.Sc., Johns Hopkins University
“Inadequate Pain Management: Implications for Immunity & Health”
3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. — Registered Nurse Magnet Pinning
Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium (corner of 19th Street South and 7th Avenue South)
The first of several pinning ceremonies scheduled throughout the week to pin all 1,700 registered nurses with UAB Hospital. The coveted Magnet nursing pin signifies achievement of the “gold standard” in nursing.

11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. — ‘Can-struction’ Judging
UAB Hospital, Atrium of West Pavilion (620 19th Street South)
A canned food drive benefiting local charities will provide the building blocks for creative “can-structions.” Prizes will be given for most cans collected and most creative “can-struction.”

10 a.m. to 11 a.m. — Magnet Ceremony
UAB Hospital, Atrium of West Pavilion (620 19th Street South)
Representatives of the American Nurses Credentialing Center will present a crystal obelisk to UAB Hospital officially recognizing UAB as a Magnet Hospital and nursing “center of excellence.”
1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. — Excellence in Nursing Awards Ceremony and Reception
Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium (corner of 19th Street South and 7th Avenue South)
Awards will be presented to clinical nurses and nurse managers selected by their peers for exemplifying exceptional nursing, interpersonal and leadership skills.
