BIRMINGHAM, AL — In FY99, UAB received more than $150 million from the National Institutes of Health, an increase of more than 13 percent from the previous year. The amount places UAB No. 18 in the nation; No. 3 in the Southeast, behind only Duke University and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
Five of UAB’s schools also are ranked among their peers in NIH funding: Health Related Professions, 2nd; Public Health, 14th; School of Medicine, 16th; School of Dentistry, 19th; and School of Nursing 50th.
Eight departments within the School of Medicine are ranked in the top 10, including anesthesiology (10th), biostatistics (7th), medicine (4th), microbiology (3rd), nutrition science (2nd), obstetrics & gynecology (3rd), pediatrics (7th) and physical medicine & rehabilitation (8th). This marks an increase from six the previous year.
