BIRMINGHAM, AL — Martin Nowak, executive director of UAB Hospital, has been named chief planning and strategy officer and director of strategic ventures for the UAB Health System. David Fine, CEO of the UAB Health System made the announcement June 3.

Additionally, David Hoidal has been named chief operating officer for UAB’s on-campus clinical programs, and Mary Nash, current chief operating officer for UAB Hospital, will become its executive director.

“Having these talented executives in new roles with expanded portfolios will allow us to better take advantage of opportunities to further develop the health care programs offered by UAB,” Fine said.

In his new role, Nowak primary responsibility will be to oversee the development of relationships with employers and health care providers throughout the state including other hospitals and physician groups.

“In the past few years, the UAB Health System has demonstrated its ability to create strategic partnerships,” Nowak said. “We have joined forces with The Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital and just recently with Bessemer Carraway, now operating as UAB Medical West. We will pursue opportunities to work with other providers as we grow the capacity and quality of our health care offerings to the people of Alabama.”

Nowak joined the hospital’s administrative staff in 1981 and held diverse and increasingly responsible positions, including executive director for the past four years. During his career he served as a vice president for Birmingham’s Medical Center East Hospital (1991-92); as administrator/CEO of St. Clair Regional Hospital in Pell City (1994-95) and administrator of the UAB Clinic in Huntsville (1995-97). A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Nowak also is a member of the Medical Group Management Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. In 1991, Nowak was named by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the “Top 40 Under 40.” He also received the UAB House Staff Excellence Award that year. Nowak earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from UAB.

Hoidal has been the principal executive responsible for the operations for The Kirklin Clinic and the UAB Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. He now will have responsibility for UAB Hospital as well. Nash has served as the hospital’s chief operating officer since November, 2000. She joined UAB Hospital in 1994 as an associate executive director and chief nursing officer and in 1999 was named senior associate executive director.

“Many of our patients are seen at inpatient and outpatient facilities on the Southside,” Fine said. “This change will allow us to streamline some of the processes involved in patients being seen at the multiple locations on campus.”
