BIRMINGHAM, AL — Joan F. Lorden, Ph.D., associate provost for research and dean of the graduate school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been named as the Dean in Residence for 2002-2003 for the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF). The CGS/NSF Dean in Residence program provides mechanisms for ongoing and substantive communications between senior administrators at universities and the NSF, a major funding source for graduate programs.

“NSF has been forward thinking in creating programs to respond to changes in the way science is done and the need of our graduate programs to keep pace in the way we educate our students,” says Lorden. “It will be a real privilege to take part in this ongoing discussion.”

Lorden, who will spend the majority of her year in residence at the NSF offices in Arlington, VA, will have the opportunity to bring to the NSF insights, perspectives and the practical experience of a senior administrator at a major research university.

Lorden, who came to UAB in 1976, has been dean of the graduate school since 1994 and associate provost for research since 1995. She has also been the director of the behavioral neuroscience program, co-director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Psychology and chair of the committee on Graduate Study in Neuroscience.

Lorden holds degrees from the City College of New York and Yale University. She is a recipient of the Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction from UAB.
