CD RECORDED AND MIXED AT UAB'S STUDIO

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham band Tekneek’s latest CD, recorded and mixed entirely in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) music studio, is in the Top 40 nationwide on the jazz chart reported by Smoothjazz.com. The CD, “Joy Ride,” moved into the No. 40 spot Monday, from No. 49 April 19 and No. 59 April 12.

This is Tekneek’s second CD. The band formed in 1995 in Birmingham. The members of Tekneek are Anthony Howze, leader and co-founder, guitar; Kelvin Benion, co-founder, keyboards; Maurice Jones Jr., co-founder, bass; and Michael Ham, saxophone. The band will perform at WorkPlay in Birmingham June 1, for their CD release party. For more information on the band, go to www.facebook.com/Tekneek-Band-108331559185275/. The CD can be purchased at local retail stores and online at www.cdbaby.com.

“Joy Ride” was recorded and mixed by UAB recording engineer James Bevelle, said Henry Panion III, university professor in the UAB Department of Music and head of UAB’s music technology program.

“To fully understand the importance of this, just look at the names of the artists and record companies represented on the list. I’m not sure if any studio in the area can claim the national success we’ve been able to achieve with our projects over the recent years. This should prove to be quite advantageous for recruiting students to the music program, in general, and the music technology program, in particular,” Panion said.

Other artists who hold positions in the Smoothjazz.com Top 50 include Luther Vandross, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Marc Antoine, David Sanborn, Simply Red and others.
