BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will conduct graduation ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8. Ceremonies will be held at Bartow Arena, 617 South 13th Street. About half of the nearly 2,000 May graduates will take part in the ceremonies.
The commencement speaker will be Lucy Jones, 22, of Huntsville, who is graduating with a major in English with a concentration in professional writing and public discourse. She also carries a minor in philosophy of law. Jones is a student in the Honors Program, a 2003 Truman Scholar and an award-winning member of the UAB Mock Trial Team. Jones was a member of Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform and organized a rally at UAB to support constitutional and tax reform. She also founded the UAB Students for Higher Education Reform organization. Following graduation in May 2004 Jones plans to pursue a law degree and a master’s in public policy. She also was named UAB’s 2004 Outstanding Woman Undergraduate.
Nicholaus B. Cummins, who will receive his Master of Arts in Music Education during the ceremony, will sing the National Anthem and the UAB Alma Mater. He earned his bachelor’s degreed in music education in 2002 from the University of Mississippi. Since coming to UAB, he has been graduate assistant to Philip Copeland, director of choral activities, and assistant director of UAB Concert Choir and UAB Chamber Choir. He is a 1997 graduate of Ridgeway High School in Memphis.
