BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) freshman Kendall Brooke Tidwell of Birmingham was named Miss UAB 2005 Thursday night, during the Miss UAB 2005 pageant at the Alys Stephens Center.
The Miss UAB pageant is an annual scholarship pageant awarding $4,350 in scholarships. Fourteen contestants were judged in four categories: interview, talent, eveningwear and swimsuit.
Tidwell, 19, is the daughter of Joe and Debbie Tidwell of Birmingham. She is a 2003 graduate of Hoover High School. Tidwell studies nursing at UAB and plans to be a neonatal nurse. For the talent portion of the competition, she sang “You Raise Me Up.” Tidwell was awarded a $1,800 scholarship.
First runner-up in the pageant was sophomore and biology/pre-med major Shuangqin “Qin” Zhang of Vestavia Hills. She is the daughter of Dr. Huang-ge Zhang and Dr. Lifeng Zhang of Vestavia Hills. In addition to a $750 scholarship, Zhang also was awarded the talent scholarship of $250.
Second runner-up was junior and math education major Holly Denise Miner of Birmingham. She is the daughter of Hal P. and Robin K. Miner of Birmingham. Miner was awarded a $650 scholarship.
Third runner-up was junior and music education major Victoria Marie Jamison of Phenix City. She is the daughter of John Henry Jamison and Rev. Ji Yaung “Kim” Cho of Phenix City. Jamison was awarded a $550 scholarship.
Fourth runner-up was sophomore and theater arts major Katherine “Lauren” Whitlock of Birmingham. She is the daughter of Donna Whitlock of Birmingham. Whitlock was awarded a $350 scholarship.
