BIRMINGHAM, AL — Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) music students were awarded first prize and first runner-up in the Bush Hills Music Club Competition, held March 15 at the home of Sallie Douglas in Hoover. The Bush Hills Music Club is an established group that has been giving scholarships to college students for decades. Both students are taught by Rachel Mathes, D.M.A., director of the UAB Opera program.
Senior Holly Bolton won the Virginia Baker Vocal Award in the competition and a prize of $200. Bolton, daughter of Rob and Gail Bolton of Columbiana, majors in music and vocal performance at UAB. She recently performed the role of the princess in the UAB Opera production of “Suor Angelica.”
Senior Sondra Phillips took first runner-up in the competition and a $50 cash prize. Phillips, of Sumiton, is the daughter of Tommy Phillips and Shirley Richardson. She majors in music and vocal performance at UAB. Phillips recently has been accepted to Florida State University’s masters program in music therapy.
