UAB Music Student Maeve Brophy Wins Two Area Piano Competitions

UAB sophomore Maeve Brophy has won first prize in two area piano competitions. On March 1, Brophy took first prize at the student auditions for the National Federation of Music Clubs in Tuscaloosa. As state winner, she moves ahead to the regional competitions and will send them a CD of her performance for judging. She was awarded a $2,000 cash prize.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — UAB sophomore Maeve Brophy has won first prize in two area piano competitions. On March 1, Brophy took first prize at the student auditions for the National Federation of Music Clubs in Tuscaloosa. As state winner, she moves ahead to the regional competitions and will send them a CD of her performance for judging. She was awarded a $2,000 cash prize.

On March 15, Brophy won the top prize for piano and also was named best overall in the Birmingham Music Club Scholarship auditions at Birmingham-Southern College. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship prize.

Brophy, 20, is the daughter of Timothy and Nancy Brophy of Bartlett, Tennessee, near Memphis. She came to UAB to study with Yakov Kasman, D.M.A., assistant professor of piano and artist-in-residence in the UAB Department of Music. Brophy previously studied last year at the Manhattan School of Music.

Brophy will give a Young Performing Artist piano recital at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the Alys Stephens Center’s Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, 1200 10th Avenue South. She will perform selected pieces from Bach, Mozart, Schumann and Scriabin. Admission is free; call (205) 934-7376 for information.
