BIRMINGHAM, AL - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Art and Art History has established a scholarship for deserving students in honor of associate professor of graphic design Marie Weaver and her husband, professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics Stephen C. Harvey, Ph.D.
The Marie Weaver and Steve Harvey Endowed Scholarship Fund for Graphic Design has so far received $8,000 in pledges. The goal is $25,000.
Upon endowment, the scholarship will be awarded to a deserving art student with a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Gifts to the endowed scholarship fund are tax deductible. For information, contact Jackie Wuska at (205) 975-2221.
"Scholarships allow us to attract the best and most talented student to UAB," said Bert Brouwer, M.F.A., dean of the UAB School of Arts and Humanities. "Throughout their years at UAB, Marie and Steve always placed students first and often went the extra mile to make their educational experiences absolutely the best. The endowed scholarship is yet another testament of this generosity of spirit and dedication to our students. What a wonderful way to keep their presence among us."
Marie Weaver has been a member of the UAB Department of Art and Art History faculty since 1990 and has been associate chair since 2000. As head of the graphic design program, she led the graphic design curriculum into the computer age. A dedicated and award-winning teacher and graphic designer, Weaver's work has received broad recognition.
Steve Harvey has been a member of the UAB Department of Biochemistry and molecular genetics since 1982 where he was an interim chair for three years. He was also chairman of the UAB Faculty Senate in 1996-97. Harvey's achievements in structural biology research and teaching have garnered him international recognition. Harvey is a strong supporter of the arts and in particular, the visual arts at UAB.
