BIRMINGHAM, AL - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) education Professor Maryann Manning, Ed.D., has received the John M. Davis Distinguished Educational Achievement Award from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for the state of Alabama.

Manning has been an active participant in the SACS. She has been a member of the SACS Commission on Elementary and Middle Schools and the Regional School Renewal Committee, and she was one of two original school renewal trainers for the state of Alabama.

In addition to her SACS service, Manning is a member of the National Commission for the Accreditation of Teacher Education's board of examiners. She is the author and co-author of 15 books and more than 150 articles on reading and writing and has presented at conferences around the world. She also chairs the Young Authors' Conference and the Mid-South Reading and Writing Institute, both of which are hosted by UAB.

Manning teaches in the UAB School of Education Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She has been a faculty member since 1972.

The SACS is a regional accrediting body in 11 southern states for colleges and universities that award associate, baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degrees.
