Patients from Hurricane-Affected Areas Evacuated to UAB

UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Hospital received 13 patients transferred from hospitals affected by Hurricane Katrina as part of the National Disaster Medical System’s air evacuation of patients from the storm-ravaged area. BIRMINGHAM, AL — UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Hospital received 13 patients transferred from hospitals affected by Hurricane Katrina as part of the National Disaster Medical System’s air evacuation of patients from the storm-ravaged area. Two flights arrived overnight on September 3, at approximately 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., carrying 88 patients to be disbursed to area hospitals.

UAB medical teams are providing triage services at the Birmingham airport as the airlift continues. Additional flights are expected to arrive over the coming days.

This brings the total number of patients at UAB Hospital who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina to 29, including four infants and one adult who were airlifted to the hospital by the UAB Critical Care Transport team on Wednesday, August 31. One additional infant who was transported has been discharged to his family. The remainder of the patients arrived in Birmingham by private transport.
