BIRMINGHAM, AL — The HIV Prevention Network, a consortium of UAB and other clinics and organizations committed to HIV prevention in Jefferson County, will mark World AIDS Day with two events:
Celebrity Basketball Game
Tuesday, November 29, 6:30 p.m.
Miles College Gymnasium
5500 Myron Massey Boulevard
Celebrities and supporters who will be on hand for the game include Jeh-Jeh Pruitt, Fox 6; Melanie Posey, Fox 6; Sharrie Williams, NBC 13; comedian Cedric Delaney, Hot 107.7; Sir Laurence, Hot 107.7; Darryl Johnson, 98.7 Kiss; the Miles College cheerleaders/dance squad; and the Jackson Olin High School cheerleaders. DJ Radu will provide the entertainment during the game, along with the group the Soul Rebels. Admission is free and open to the public.

The event will feature a showing of the HIV documentary “A Closer Walk” and a panel discussion with local community, medical and advocacy leaders, including U.S. Rep. Artur Davis. Admission is free and open to the public.
The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, is “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.” The purpose is to focus global attention on the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to demonstrate the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Participating groups of the HIV Prevention Network include AIDS Alabama; AIDS in Minorities; Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic at UAB; American Red Cross; Birmingham AIDS Outreach; Birmingham Healthcare; Birmingham VA Hospital; Cooper Green Hospital; Covenant Metropolitan Community Church; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Birmingham Alumnae Chapter; Family Clinic; UAB at Children's Hospital; Girls Inc. of Central Alabama; Jefferson County Consumer Group; Jefferson County Health Department; MICTAN (Metropolitan Interdenominational Church Technical Assistance Network); MOMS, UAB School of Public Health; St. George's Clinic; UAB Center for AIDS Research; UAB 1917 Clinic; UAB Safe Zone Program; and WOW Community Outreach.
