BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Eben L. Rosenthal, M.D., UAB associate professor of surgery, has been named as the initial holder of the Julius N. Hicks Chair of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. The action was taken today by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, which established the chair last year in honor of the longtime former director of the Division of Otolaryngology.

Rosenthal received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he also completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in otolaryngology. After completing a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, Rosenthal joined the Division of Otolaryngology at UAB.

Rosenthal is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He specializes in the management and surgical reconstruction of head and neck cancer defects and has been instrumental in the development of the Head and Neck Cancer Research Program at UAB. His research focuses on the identification of novel therapeutic targets in cancer and the use of fluorescent probes to image cancer during surgery; he has obtained more than $1.4 million in grant support to pursue these endeavors.

He also has an appointment in the Department of Pathology and is an associate scientist for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UAB Center for Metabolic Bone Disease.
