UAB Hospital Receives Coveted "Nursing Magnet" Recognition

BIRMINGHAM, AL — In recognition accorded to fewer than 200 of the nation’s 5,000 health care provider organizations, UAB Hospital received word yesterday, April 6, that it has been recertified as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). UAB Hospital is one of only 17 in the Southeast, and the only one in Alabama to attain the prestigious Magnet designation for its nursing excellence. The hospital first received this ANCC certification in 2002 and was among the first to do so in the region.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — In recognition accorded to fewer than 200 of the nation’s 5,000 health care provider organizations, UAB Hospital received word yesterday, April 6, that it has been recertified as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

UAB Hospital is one of only 17 in the Southeast, and the only one in Alabama to attain the prestigious Magnet designation for its nursing excellence. The hospital first received this ANCC certification in 2002 and was among the first to do so in the region.

The ANCC Magnet program recognizes excellence in nursing administration and nursing involvement in all areas of the organization, use of standards and quality improvement processes to promote high quality patient outcomes, and ongoing programs that promote continued nursing professional development and enhanced competency.

Magnet recognition comes only after a rigorous application process involving an on-site accreditation visit and submission of details about how the hospital exceeds established standards of excellence in nursing practice and leadership.

“Nursing excellence is a way of life at UAB,” said, UAB Hospital Associate Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Cynthia Barginere, R.N., M.S.N., who commended the nursing leadership team and the hospital’s direct care nurses for their “continuing care and commitment to excellence in patient care.”

Michael R. Waldrum, M.D., UAB Hospital’s chief operating officer, said “Magnet designation affirms what everyone in our hospital — most especially our patients — already know: nursing excellence is core to what defines the overall excellence of our hospital.”
