Evelyn Douglas, 52, of Bessemer, has won the first University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Voytek Zubek Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Evelyn Douglas, 52, of Bessemer, has won the first University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Voytek Zubek Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Douglas, a native of Opelika, is a senior political science major in the UAB Department of Government. She plans to attend law school following graduation in 2008 and to pursue a career promoting children’s and women’s rights. She is the daughter of Evelyn Kaye of Bessemer.

The UAB Voytek Zubek Memorial Endowed Scholarship comes with a $1,250 award for tuition and fees. The scholarship is a competitive, annual award given to students who demonstrate academic promise. To qualify, students must be enrolled in the Department of Government as a political science major. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 overall G.P.A., and a 3.3 G.P.A., in political science.

The award is named in memory of UAB Associate Professor Voytek Zubek, Ph.D., who died in 1998. Zubek, a native of Poland, was a well-respected authority on eastern European politics.
