BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama at Birmingham(UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center has named Michael Bertram, Ph.D., associate director for administration.

In his new role Bertram will oversee the administrative operations of the Cancer Center’s numerous research programs. He also will run the testing centers, research labs and clinical-trial teams that fall within the Cancer Center network. Bertram starts Nov. 1.

He most recently served as administrative director for UAB’s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) where he helped manage that group’s operations, and where he ran eight CFAR-affiliated research facilities. Bertram served as a member of CFAR’s executive committee, where he helped set strategy and policy. He currently sits on the UAB Council of Center Administrators.

“Michael brings a new and fresh enthusiasm to our leadership team,” said Cancer Center Director Edward Partridge, M.D. “His experience as a researcher gives him valuable insight not shared by many center administrators.”

Bertram received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Missouri and earned a doctorate in genetics and molecular biology from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He is working toward a master’s degree in business administration at UAB.

Bertram is the recipient of numerous professional awards and honors, and he is a member of the Society of Research Administrators International.

UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only one within a five-state region to have the U.S. National Institutes of Health comprehensive designation.
