IMANI WINDS, 7:30 p.m., Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. S. Part of the Dr. Chandler Smith and Jane Paris-Smith Birmingham Chamber Music Society Series. The Grammy-nominated Imani Winds strives to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quartet. The name Imani, which literally means “faith” in Swahili, embodies the mission of this young African/Latin-American ensemble. Their commitment to explore new forms can be seen in their tribute to Josephine Baker that premiered in 2006 to great acclaim. They are the former ensemble in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. This show is part of the 2008 Alabama Dance Festival. The work of Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer is acclaimed for exploring the duet form with video partnering, creating a magically populated stage where image and reality collide. Come early for a performance in the lobby from the Birmingham Boys Choir. The famous boys’ choir, formed in 1498, performed exclusively for the imperial court of Vienna until 1918 when the public had the pleasure of hearing them perform for the first time. Today there are 100 choristers between the ages of 10 and 14, divided into four touring choirs. The choirs perform more than 300 concerts each year for half a million fans.
