BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dixon Dorand, 21, of Montgomery, and Riley Susanne Carpenter, 20, of Butler, were named Mr. and Ms. UAB for 2007 during the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) homecoming game festivities Saturday, Oct. 13, at Legion Field.
Dorand is a junior majoring in biology and history and a student in the UAB Honors Program. He is member of the UAB TrailBlazers, the UAB Ambassadors and the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Dorand also was a telephone counselor with the Birmingham Crisis Center and PUSH America. He is the son of Dr. Rodney and Barbara Dorand of Montgomery.
Carpenter is a junior majoring in biology. She has been accepted into the Early Medical School Acceptance Program at UAB and the Golden Key Honor Society. She is programs chairwoman for the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA). She also is an active participant with Habitat for Humanity and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
In addition to her campus activities, Carpenter has volunteered with the United Way Crisis Center and Strike Out Arthritis. She is the daughter of George and Susan Carpenter of Butler.
The winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB competition will each receive a $1,500 scholarship from the UAB National Alumni Society. They will work closely with the Alumni Society’s board of directors as student representatives to raise awareness of the organization’s Student Alumni Society, scholarship programs and events.
