NSF GrantResearch from UAB on neuromorphic computing is now being funded by a National Science Foundation grant. The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham a more than $250,000 RII Track-4 grant that will allow researchers to look into neuromorphic computing to help sustain artificial intelligence.

“Currently, artificial intelligence relies on von Neumann-based computing technology,” said UAB Department of Physics Assistant Professor Fei Xue, Ph.D., Ph.D. “Although it has worked so far, this could limit widespread AI usage since some AI functions use a lot of energy for data-intensive tasks.”

Xue’s research, “Spin-orbitronics in quantum materials for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing,” hopes to expand what people know about neuromorphic computing so it can keep energy limitations from hindering AI usage.
