Birmingham native and rising sophomore Mariam Massoud has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright US-UK Summer Institute Scholarship.
Each year, the US-UK Fulbright Commission supports up to 60 undergraduate students in the United States to undertake demanding academic and cultural summer programs at leading institutions in the United Kingdom.
Massoud is a civil engineering major in the UAB School of Engineering and a student in the UAB Honors College pursuing a personalized path. She will attend the Fulbright Scotland Summer Institute on Technology, Innovation and Creativity, a three-week academic and cultural program for U.S. students hosted by the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Strathclyde.
“I was really surprised to be offered the chance to study in Scotland,” Massoud said. “The Institute is unique in that it is hosted by two different universities, so I’ll have the chance to study both art and technology, two interests I am passionate about combining. Glasgow is similar to Birmingham in that it has also seen a recent period of urban revitalization, and the city is growing in success and popularity as a result. Within that transformation, there are definitely lessons to take home to Birmingham.”
Students will be led by faculty and senior figures from the private and public sectors. Participants will explore Scotland’s culture, history, and creative and technological industries. Summer Institutes form part of the US-UK Fulbright Commission’s work to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.
