Jennifer Summerlin, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UAB School of Education, has been selected to serve on the 2018 Children’s Literature Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English. Summerlin will be one of six committee members tasked with selecting the assembly’s Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts for 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The Children’s Literature Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English is a professional community of children’s literature enthusiasts who advocate the centrality of literature in children’s academic and personal lives.
The charge of the six-member national committee is to select 30 books that best exemplify the criteria established for the Notables Award. The assembly’s Notables list is an annual list of works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry written for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. All books selected represent playful, inventive and unique use of language.
Summerlin teaches courses in children’s literature, language arts in the elementary classroom and developmental reading in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
