Maryann ManningRenowned literacy expert and longtime University of Alabama at Birmingham faculty member Maryann Manning, Ed.D., has been inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame. Manning was honored posthumously during the International Literacy Association conference July 10 in Boston. Manning passed away Sept., 2013, while attending a literacy conference in Indonesia.
Manning joined the UAB faculty in 1972 and served 35 years, finishing her UAB career as distinguished professor emerita. Manning wrote more than 10 books and was an active member of the International Reading Association, in which she served on the board of directors and was also slated to served as the organization’s 2015-2016 president. The IRA’s volunteer service award is named in her honor.

To continue Manning’s commitment and work in the field of literacy, the UAB School of Education founded the Maryann Manning Family Literacy Center in 2014. The center supports and disseminates research in literacy, provides professional development for teachers and students, centralizes the operation and organization of numerous projects begun by Manning, and creates innovative literacy projects, both locally and globally.
The International Literacy Association is a global advocacy and membership organization dedicated to advancing literacy for all through its network of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers and experts across 75 countries. The organization publishes several peer-reviewed journals, including The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, and Reading Research Quarterly.
