A new work by a University of Alabama at Birmingham professor will premiere at a free concert on campus Thursday, March 10.
The Perrine-Utley Saxophone Duo will premiere “Sonata: Folie à Deux” by UAB Associate Professor of Music William Price, DMA, at 7:30 p.m. in UAB’s Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South.
Price teaches music theory and composition in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music.The UAB Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities sponsors the concert. The program includes the world premiere of “Circling” for two saxophones by David Froom; “The Garden of Love” for alto saxophone and fixed media by Jacob ter Veldhuis;“Caprice en forme de valse” by Paul Bonneau; and “Rush Hour” for tenor saxophone and fixed media by Price.
Saxophonists John Perrine and Brian Utley are regular guest artists and clinicians at universities and secondary schools throughout the country. Perrine is associate professor of music and chair of the Department of Music at Cleveland State University in Ohio, where he teaches saxophone, directs the jazz ensembles and is the coordinator of Jazz Studies. Brian Utley is adjunct associate professor of saxophone at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, and has been a featured soloist with the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Jackson Symphony and the Nashville-based contemporary music ensemble, Intersection.
