William C. Bailey, professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for 50 years of exemplary service by the Tulane Medical Alumni Association. Bailey is a 1965 graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine.
Bailey is the founding director of the UAB Lung Health Center and Eminent Scholar Chair in Pulmonary Diseases. He joined the UAB faculty in 1973 and founded the Lung Health Center in 1984. He is director of the American Lung Association-Asthma Clinical Research Network, which consists of 19 clinical centers across the United States. He is also chair of the Tuberculosis Advisory Council to the State of Alabama health officer. He has a long history of involvement in research, education and clinical care related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COPD, asthma and tuberculosis.
He has also served on the board of directors of the American Thoracic Society and on the Council of the National, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. In addition, Bailey has been a member of many editorial review boards of peer-reviewed journals and has served frequently as a scientific reviewer of both scientific articles and peer-reviewed research. He has published more than 200 articles and has been the recipient of many grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health and other sources.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and pulmonary disease, having received certified specialty training in these disciplines at Tulane University Medical Center and Charity Hospital of Louisiana.
