Sumanth D. Prabhu, M.D., has been named professor and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, effective Oct. 1, 2011.
Prabhu is currently a professor and University Scholar in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Louisville. At University Hospital he serves as the chief of the section on cardiology, medical director of the heart failure program, director of heart failure and transplant research and of the preventive cardiology clinic.
Prabhu received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he graduated summa cum laude. Prabhu then completed his internship, residency and a Physician Investigator Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Prabhu’s cardiovascular disease fellowship was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Prabhu replaces Ami Iskandrian, M.D., who has been serving as the interim director for the Division of Cardiovascular Disease since January 2011.
