Erin Shaughnessy, M.D., has been named director of the division ofShaughnessy joins UAB and Children’s of Alabama from Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. Shaughnessy hopes to continue to build upon the excellence in patient care, research and teaching that the division is known for, as well as improve safety and quality of care.
“Joining UAB and Children’s of Alabama is an exciting opportunity and one that I am eager to begin,” Shaughnessy said. “I hope to continue to grow our division and continue to build upon the unmatched care we provide our patients and the contributions to research that have been the hallmark of the division for years.”
Her research is broadly centered in improving outcomes in hospitalized children. Most recently, she contributed to the Michigan Appropriateness Guideline for Intravascular Catheters in Pediatrics published in Pediatrics (June 2020), which provides practical guidance to clinicians choosing vascular access devices for children to optimize safety. Additionally, another focus of her work is in improving communication across transitions of care and as part of family-centered rounds through the national IPASS study group.
Shaughnessy serves as deputy editor of Reviews and Perspectives for the Journal of Hospital Medicine. In her director role, she succeeds former division director Robert Pass, M.D.
