President Ray Watts speaks to students working in UAB's Solution Studios.Students, along with physicians, nurses and engineers, have been working together to create solutions to problems that patients and caregivers often experience in and out of the hospital. Soon, they will have the opportunity to share their projects with Birmingham business leaders.
UAB Solution Studios™ at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Innovate Birmingham will host the inaugural Birmingham Clinical Innovation Conference on Tuesday, April 10.
The goal of the conference is to give a voice to the physicians, nurses, students, investors, industry personnel and university administrators participating in the translation of innovation from the academic setting into the commercial marketplace.
The keynote speaker is Ibraheem Badejo, Ph.D., senior director of New Ventures at Johnson & Johnson. A panel of local business leaders will discuss building relationships for strategic investments. The panel includes James Childs, chair of Bradley Ventures at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP; Miller Girvin, CEO, Alabama Capital Network; and Greg Sheek, director of Alabama Launchpad. Robert Crutchfield, executive director of Innovate Birmingham, will moderate the discussion.
UAB Solution Studios™ is a partnership between the UAB schools of Engineering and Nursing, the Honors College, and UAB Hospital. Its purpose is to accelerate the translation of clinical innovation by training clinicians and STEM students — those studying science, technology, engineering or math — to collaborate and think creatively around solutions to clinical problems.
The conference will be held at the Edge of Chaos at UAB, located on the fourth floor of Lister Hill Library, 1700 University Blvd. The event will be from 1-4:30 p.m. with a reception following until 6 p.m. in conjunction with the UAB School of Medicine Art Show.
